the sound of music on the big screen in 2013

I so remember when I was a little girl, my mother gathered my brother and me one afternoon to see a movie.  This was not like going to see just any movie.  It was special.  We went to a special theater that was beautiful - it was not at a mall.  We sat there dressed up waiting for the HUGE red curtain to open.  It opened and the magic began...the magic of The Sound of Music.  We were mesmerized...all the kids, the singing, the scenery, the fun.  We left the movie happy and singing.  I was asking my mom why we didn't have more brothers and sisters.  I have no idea how many times I have seen The Sound of Music since then.

Well...fast forward to yesterday where I had the pleasure...it really felt like a privileged may I just say, to see The Sound of Music on the big screen...again...with my wonderful mother next to me...again.  Mind you, this time we had stadium seating with a fabulous sound system.  It was nothing short of fabulous...really...and I found it so odd that I was once again mesmerized and so enchanted even though I knew the whole story.  The experience of seeing it on the big screen stands alone.  It is how it was meant to be seen. I was totally immersed, the words to the songs resonated in a different way, the scenery, the home, the abbey...all absolutely spectacular.  I whispered in my mother's ear several times, "This is fabulous!". There was even an intermission which seemed so charming at a movie in 2013.  It is a wonderful memory I shall cherish, as I cherish the memory of when we first saw it how many years ago.

This is part of Cinemark's Classic Series.  @CinemarkUSA runs the movies on Wednesday's at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm across the country.  Here are the next three classics coming your way.  Go see one...it is quite the treat!

going to see anderson cooper at his anderson live show

Okay...I am huge @andersoncooper fan and follow him on twitter.  A tweet came through in summer about getting tickets to see his daytime show @andersonlive and I responded almost immediately.  Several weeks pass and I receive an email that I indeed got tickets to the show.  Once I found out, I invited my mother to join me and then booked the airline tickets pronto. I was so darn excited...NYC here we come!

The day arrives and we are in line for the show.

We were concerned as to whether or not we would actually make it in as there was a woman behind us saying that she goes to lots of show and doesn't always get in.  She kept saying it over and over...I was getting a tad anxious.  Well...we did make it in and were beyond delighted.  Here we are in the holding area waiting.

Off we go...his show is taped at a CBS Studio and we passed this sign on our way. @CBSSunday Morning is a favorite of mine...so exciting and then 60 Minutes too...

We arrive to the new @andersonlive set - it is beautiful and is a buzz with energy.  I love that he incorporated his mother's art as it adds such a personal touch and lovely warmth to the set.

We get ushered in and end up with absolutely stellar seats in the comfy benches in the front...happy, happy.  We are told to turn off our phones and the comedian starts warming up the audience...she was FAB-U-LOUS!  You could just feel the energy...it was happy, fun and full of life.  She then announced whom was going to be on the show and I hear her say @sharktankabc...seriously?  I was, of course, super excited being an entrepreneur.  Then the Nealy's @ginaandpatneely were on and because of where we were seated, we were given a plate to taste what they made...may I just say, absolutely delicious.

The whole experience was such a thrill. Oh and did I say...@andersoncooper is A-DORE-ABLE!  He has such a great way about him and is so warm and kind...and that laugh...LOVE it!

The show we were on airs today so if you get a chance tune in.  For that matter, tune in everyday...I do!  Here's a preview.

The show ends and it is time to leave...didn't really want to leave as it was such fun being there.  BTW...I just have to share this photo of where we were seated - in the third bench in the middle section...how cool was that?!  It was pretty darn cool...just saying.

Thank you to the @andersonlive team for treating my mom and me so well.  We truly had the best time and can't wait to visit again.

COSE Business Pitch Competition - Shark Tank Style with Daymond John

It begins with receiving this in the mail…

Daymond is going to be a Keynote Speaker at the COSE Small Business Conference.  I say to myself, “I am going to get myself in front of Daymond John”.  I am an avid watcher of Shark Tank and who is more perfect to share my idea with than Daymond?

Now, I saw it going something like, “Debbie, this is Daymond.”  “Daymond, this is Debbie,” and I proceed to tell him about girltrunks.  Well…COSE had something else in mind – a Business Pitch Competition.

I had to totally go for it, and I did.  The rules of the competition were revealed and a two-page Executive Summary and two-minute video were required.  With the assistance, support and talent of wonderful people in my life, both of the “two” were completed.  Around 90 of us submitted our business ideas and the judges were choosing 20 to go into the next round.  The Top 20 would then have to pitch their idea to a panel of 10 judges.  I made it in the top 20.  What’s next?

So now I had to do a presentation.  With all my years in business, I had never done a Power Point presentation before.  I remember practicing, to make sure my timing was on target and thinking to myself, “Don’t forget to forward the slides as you are talking.”  The day arrives, it’s my turn, they hand me the remote clicker, my hands were shaking, my voice was quivering and I proceed to give my pitch.  The nervousness wore off and just like that it was done.

Now the wait and see.  On a beautiful Friday after lunch with a friend, I checked my voicemail to find a message that I made into the Final 4.  To say I was excited was a total understatement – I was over the moon thrilled.   In the meantime, I am interviewed for an article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.  So now the preparation goes into pitching in front of Daymond John and a panel of judges at the kick-off event the night before the COSE SBC.  If you watch the Shark Tank you know how crazy and intense some of the questions the sharks pose to the entrepreneurs can be.  As a result, I researched and studied like a maniac.  I felt as if I was back in college before finals.

I find out I am first to present which actually came as great news.  I am at the event, I am prepared, I go on in front of over 400 people and pitch my heart out.

The beginning of the presentation...

I was so speaking from the heart as I am so passionate about girltrunks. Love the girltrunks boxes in front of all the judges.

Sharing the unsolicited testimonial girltrunks receives.

The part I was most nervous about – the dreaded Q&A.  Every one of the judges asked me questions.  I can remember standing there with a smile on my face, listening and answering their questions, thinking to myself, “Aren’t my 7-8 minutes up already?”  To say it was intense is an absolute understatement.

Receiving the check…so exciting!

It truly was a thrill and opportunity of a lifetime.  The next day at the conference after Daymond gave his amazing and high-energy Keynote address, those of us that made it in the final four had the privilege of sharing breakfast with him.  He could not have been more gracious and lovely.  And…he’s quite the sharp dresser.  Unfortunately, girltrunks is a conflict of interest for him.  We communicated a couple of times post meeting and in the process, he offered to send me his books - The Brand Within and Display of Power which I graciously accepted.

It was a wild yet, fantastic ride.  Wonderful things have definitely come across my path from putting myself and girltrunks out there.  I thank COSE for this amazing opportunity and for all the wonderful people in my life for their unwavering love and support.

When I watch the Shark Tank now, I think, ”Oh my gosh…I actually met Daymond John…how cool is that?! “ Pretty darn cool.  If you use twitter, I highly recommend following him @TheSharkDaymond.

girltrunks california adventure part four...

After a very windy drive from Long Beach to Santa Monica we arrived at the oh so swanky Viceroy

What a cool hotel! And was it ever buzzing with activity. As we were checking in they offered us champagne...why not?  We were giddy with excitement and so thrilled to be there after the intensity of the past few days. We both love great hotels and design and this one was indeed FABULOUS on all accounts!  We got settled in the room and chose to order room service. You might laugh at what we both ordered...grilled cheese...gotta love it!

The next day was the press event. Since we were staying in the hotel where the event took place, it made every thing extra smooth. Here is the girltrunks table...

We met such great folks from the press as well as others that participated in the event. Mara with Kooky Klickers was at the next table and Kelly with striking - reinvent your skin was a few tables down. Kooky Klickers is a fun product for kids and adults alike and striking is a must for the female-aging skin.

When were on our way back to the room after the event was over there was a film crew going through the lobby. Well I, of course, had to investigate and here they were taping Giuliana and Bill.

My friend just looked at me as she could see how excited I was...and I was...she grabbed my stuff and took it to the room. Now I had to figure out where to position myself so I could see all that was going on. I found the perfect spot and might even end up in the episode. I cannot tell you how fun it was and I think I actually witnessed some "real" drama which I shall keep to myself. Johanna came down and we sat outside and had a blast. After the camera crew departed we made our way to Whist for a wonderful meal at the hotel.

The Viceroy was a fantastic ending to a fantastic and memorable trip!
